Three Tips to Keep Your Thedford Home Comfortable During the Winter Months

November 24, 2015

The plummeting temperatures in Thedford aren’t going anywhere, and while it’s not hard to fantasize about the warmer temperatures, it’s important to remember that you can remain just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a big role in this, which is why it’s so important to keep up with annual furnace service.

We do have to mention that there aren’t many things that will provide as much to your comfort this season as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service should be scheduled annually. After all, who wants to spend a frigid winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them comfortable the entire season?

Already done with your annual furnace service? Here are a couple other jobs you can do to help keep your home comfortable:

  • Energy audit — most energy companies will offer an energy audit for your home so you can uncover areas that need improving. You may be surprised what areas are allowing hot or cold air to escape.
  • Weatherstripping — regardless of the door’s location, doors allow the opportunity for a lot of cold air to make it’s way inside your home. However, when your door is shut, you could still have air making its way inside. Check to see if your weatherstripping is all good or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be allowing cold air inside. If you notice any issues, weatherstripping is easy to swap and may take care of the problem.
  • Recessed lighting — one of the most common culprits for air leaks could be your recessed lighting. Depending on the age of your lights, they could be letting all the hot air in your home escape through your ceiling. Fixing this is as easy as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.

These couple of tips are just a starting point, but do recognize that there are other simple fixes you can complete once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy things to complete on the weekend.
